What do I want from DVDs?
Most reviewers will tell you what they like about the movie, so?
I want to tell you about the DVD. I want to tell you in
excruciating detail why the Special Edition is worthy of the cost. I want
to let you know why not to buy the VHS copy of the movie.
What do I expect?
I have been into DVD longer then most of the other reviewers for the site.
I expect a little more than just a movie when I purchase a DVD. I
expect the DVD experience, with all the little extras that make the
format what it is.

FATTY'S GRADE GUIDE

A

An 'A' is a tough grade to get. The DVD really has to have a lot of extras to offer. Great Video quality, the films original aspect ratio, and great sound. It has to include subtitles and languages selections. It also has to include at least one really good commentary. The menus have to be well laid out, nice to look at, catchy, they have to fit the film, include production notes, and at least one theatrical trailer, in its original aspect ratio. It has to have a nice box, no flipping of discs while viewing, and keep my teeth white.

This film is above average. It includes some great extras, video quality is top notch and in its original aspect ratio. It has decent menus, and a trailer. The reason this doesn't get the 'A' is it is missing something, I would like to see. But a 'B' is probably a movie I would want to own.

It doesn't get anymore average than this. It probably has really good quality picture and sound, but few extras. And Menu's and chapter stops are not extras! I probably wouldn't buy a C film, but I meant rent a few.

So you decide not to put any extras on your DVD, and pass a full frame only version of a movie that was in widescreen originally. Then slap a $30 price tag on it, and you got a 'D'.

Someone screwed up somewhere. Video quality can't be mentioned, since there is obviously no quality. What is that scratching noise I keep hearing in the Mono soundtrack? Oh thanks for not including anything other than a full frame transfer and chapter stops, here is your 'F'.
