A Review of the Sphere DVD
By PESCIERO
August 27, 1998

Far below the surface in the mid Pacific. U.S. officials have isolated what may be the greatest discovery in human history. They've found a huge space craft that plunged into the depths-300 years ago.

What is the spacecraft's origin? Could there still be living intelligence aboard? Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Samuel L. Jackson portray members of an elite underwater team charged with finding the answers in Sphere, the deep-water, deep-suspense science-fiction adventure that shapes a new dimension in thrills. And it brings the underwater squad face to face with a mysterious terror as near as their own thoughts.

Needless to say, this is a great DVD. Because of all the negative reviews from the critics and the fact that this movie made nowhere close to what was expected at the box office, I was a little discouraged to say the least. But hey, when a film has such great talent as Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, and the upcoming film star Liev Schreiber you know you can't go wrong.

Despite a great cast, this film had its share of flaws. I didn't think that the relationship between Stone's character and the character Hoffman played was necessary. The film also displayed an unrealistic nature. In the blink of an eye, a character is seen emerged in the water wearing a dive suit, when in fact it would take a lot of time and assistance to even put on the cumbersome suit. Besides these shortcomings, it was a pretty solid film.

My thoughts on the Special Features:
If you have a good home theater system, you will be very pleased with this DVD. I don't want to give away the movie or anything, but certain scenes really put your sound system to work.

And let's not leave out a very important quality to anyone with half a brain: it's only in widescreen! As far as I am concerned, this format is the only way to watch a movie. The video quality is very clean and crisp as well. And as for the behind the scenes documentary, if you are a film buff like I am, you will probably be watching this one over and over again. This only leaves one more thing to talk about: the audio commentary by the very cool and laid back Samuel L. Jackson and Dustin Hoffman. This is one feature that I really look for on a DVD. Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed this disk.
